Diversity Experience
As a teacher, students from all walks of life will come into our classroom. Music is a subject that will help students from diverse backgrounds come together for one common goal: to make beautiful music.
In the Spring of 2015, the University of Mary Music Department went on tour to Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, the band and choir performed at multiple schools, including schools that were all-female and all-male schools. Many students were surprised to see a male or female walk through the halls of the school, depending on the school we were performing at. Many of the schools had their students perform for us and allow us to offer feedback on their performances. At one school, the collegiate band members sat among the high school band students and performed a piece of music with them, working with both the High School Director and our College Director, Mr. Dennis Gowen. We spent over 10 hours performing in the Chicago metro area.
During the Fall of 2016, I visited and observed in Zeeland, ND at the K-12 school in Zeeland. Mrs. Trudy Fraase-Wolf is the music teacher at the school, along with the school librarian, elementary school principal, and high school principal. It was a very memorable day in Zeeland, having the opportunity to conduct a Grade 4-12 band in rehearsal and observe a K-6 Physical Education class. During other University of Mary Music Department tours, we visited rural locations such as Richardton, ND; Hettinger, ND; Beulah, ND; and Miles City, MT.
